Tonight is the first time I've tried 'Old Brown Dog Ale' by Smuttynose. They're a nice brewing company in Portsmouth, NH.
This particular ale is a nice and smooth...it goes down easy. I'd rate it fairly high on the scale for brown ales. Maybe 8/10. I think six packs run around 8 bucks, so it won't break the bank.
Recommended.

I've quite enjoyed other British pint cans, so I have high hopes for Boddingtons... as I hold in my hand a nice cold can of it, anticipating my first sip.
Creamyness, that is my first taste. Creamy and light. A bit too on the light side for me, but it's not bad taste wise, if you want a light beer. It's true to the words on the can, "Smooth and Creamy". I'd give it a 6 out of 10...I don't have much else to say
Worth a try if you like lighter beers, but I defnitely prefer Beamish when I want a creamy ale as it has more taste.

The above is all it takes for a great monday night. Newcastle followed by Summer Shandy followed by Beamish followed by Sunset Wheat followed by Hennepin. All are excellent beers - I have no complaints with any of them. Leinenkugel’s never disappoints, neither do Newcastle or Beamish, and Ommegang’s Hennepin is also a stellar brew.
If you haven’t tried these - do so immediately!

Another first, I decided to try some Old Rasputin. Their Russian Imperial Stout. From the North Coast Brewing Co, Fort Bragg, CA.
Another darker beer, but also good. I thought the bottle looked interesting as well as the name, so I gave it a try. It comes in 4-packs, so it wasn’t too big of a commitment. It’s a little bitter for my current mood, but it is another good beer. Also worth trying. I’ll update my post if I find more to say as I go through the rest of the 4 pack.

Yesterday in the microbrew and foreign section at the liquor store, I saw a man shuffle through 6 or 8 cases of a beer…presumably to find the optimal dated box of it. On the assumption that it was worth fussing over that much, I had to try it. I haven’t tried many German beers, and this one ain’t bad.
It’s my first from Paulaner Muchen, and only the second Double Bock that I’ve tried. The other being the Sam Adams Double Bock.
It tastes dark, and while at first it’s not quite my thing - it gets better the further you go into the bottle. Worth trying.

As my lips pressed against the cold mouth of my bottle of Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy, I knew I was about to be in for a treat. My first taste provided me with a subtle, smooth flavor with a hint of lemonade. Quite a treat, and a flavor I haven’t experienced before in beer.
I recently (in the past few months) discovered their Sunset Wheat, and have been meaning to try some of their other beers. Finally, tonight at the package store I discovered the Leinenkugel’s Explorer VarietyPack with 4 different kinds of Leinenkugel’s. Enter the Summer Shandy. Definitely recommended.

Mmm…. mellow, creamy goodness. Old Speckled Hen. A great way to end your day.

This is my first entry in what I hope will be a regular beer log. I enjoy sampling all kinds of random beers that I find at my favorite package store, and it’s about time I start writing about them.
Tonight I saw a catchy bottle of beer, “Blushing Monk”. A standard 22oz, boasting raspberry flavor and 12.3% alcohol per volume (making it no slouch). I quite enjoy my belgians at 8-9%, but over 12 seems pushing it.
As I opened the bottle, I immediately noticed the strong scent of raspberry - I’m not a huge fruit buff, but it was a pleasant smell. Upon pouring, I noticed how deeply red the beer is. My first taste did not disappoint. I was expecting bitterness, but I didn’t experience any. The raspberry results in a tartness similar to cranberries, but masks any bad taste. It’s probably not for everyone, but I know this won’t be the last time I drink Blushing Monk.

Being my first beer log, I don’t have a rating system yet…so I will summarize with big on taste, and big on buzz. Above average caliber.
(This is also my first post from my macbook)
Cheers

While this had no relation to lent, I went 40 days without any alcohol (beer or otherwise) before I caved. I could've held on longer...but I think as long as I get my needed exercise and am more selective in my eating otherwise I will be fine.
Mmm, beer... I also enjoyed some nice English Mead last night.
